Those expecting to hear about the next big update and expansion coming to Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile this week will have to wait a bit longer. The developer confirmed on Twitter that it would announce update 3.6.0 on February 19th. It would subsequently launch on March 8th for PC and March 11th for Xbox One.

Since the developers are calling the previous announcement an estimate so technically, this was not a delay but it means little to the fans who are waiting. On the bright side, Grinding Gear Games are now close enough into the development that they can project release dates with more accuracy. Therefore, 19 February 2019 will have the official expansion announcement, which will launch on 08 March 2019 for PC. It will launch three days later, on 11 March 2019 for Xbox One and finally at some point in mid-March 2019 for PlayStation 4. There is still no precise date for PS4 though.

Developer Grinding Gear Games announced the release of the game on the PlayStation 4 in November 2018 and first said it was targeting a December 2018 release date, though that date came and went with no game after the developer pushed back the release window. Grinding Gear then said the game was expected to release in early February for Sony’s console, but in the most recent update from the developer, it seems that’s not the case any longer. Path of Exile is still going strong thanks to GGG's careful engagement maintenance and successful monetization strategies, and we should see tons of new content roll out as the game continues turning the F2P sector's gears. The game's ironclad success caught the attention of Chinese juggernaut Tencent, who bought a majority stake in Grinding Gear Games to ensure the game's longevity.

Expect to learn how to structure releases into seasons with predictable release dates and scope, how to re-use content for rapid development, how to use procedural generation to keep content from feeling stale, how to employ multiple overlapping axes of randomness for additional replayability, how to design deep gameplay systems that keep players engaged and -- most importantly -- how to grow your community over a long period of time!

At the same time, Grinding Gear is scrapping its DirectX 9 version of the game. DX9 was required to ensure that Vista and XP users were fully supported. But most players who were using the DirectX 9 version were doing so simply because it allowed them to disable shadows, rather than because their system was unable to support DX11.
